Duingt occupies a privileged position on the western shore of Lake Annecy, approximately 12 kilometers south of the departmental capital, Annecy. The commune's territory extends from the lakeshore, at an elevation of around 440 meters, up into the forested foothills of the Bauges Massif, reaching a maximum altitude of over 1,600 meters near Montagne du Charbon. The village itself is built on a morainic hill and is connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus, with the iconic Château de Duingt situated on a separate rocky island linked by a causeway. This unique geography provides panoramic views across the lake towards Talloires, the Tournette mountain, and the Dents de Lanfon.

History

The strategic and defensible location of Duingt has attracted settlement since antiquity, with evidence of occupation during the Roman Empire. The site gained significant importance in the medieval period, with the first written mention of the *castrum Duincti* appearing in a charter from 1119. The Château de Duingt, originally a fortress of the Seigneurie de Duin, played a key role in controlling navigation and trade on Lake Annecy. Throughout the Middle Ages, the lordship changed hands among regional noble families, including the Menthon and Sales families. Following the annexation of Savoy to France in 1860 under the Treaty of Turin, Duingt became part of the modern French state. Duingt is celebrated for its rich cultural heritage, centered on the iconic, privately-owned Château de Duingt, a listed historical monument with origins in the 11th and 13th centuries. The village church, Église Saint-Michel, contains notable frescoes and artworks. The annual cultural calendar includes traditional festivals, summer concerts, and a popular Christmas market. The village is a starting point for numerous hiking trails into the Bauges Massif and is a highlight on the cycling route of the Tour de France, which has passed through on several stages.
