The venue was formally dedicated as Dick Howser Stadium in 1988, honoring the memory of the Florida State University baseball and football standout who later managed the Kansas City Royals to a 1985 World Series championship. This period also saw the program solidify its status under Mike Martin, who would become the winningest coach in NCAA history, with the stadium serving as the backdrop for many of his record-setting victories.

The main structure features a grandstand behind home plate with chairback seating, flanked by expansive aluminum bleacher sections that create a bowl-like environment. It has served as a host site for the NCAA tournament on over twenty occasions, including the 1994, 1999, and 2008 NCAA regional tournaments. The stadium was the setting for the 2002 NCAA super regional where the Seminoles defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to advance to the College World Series. Beyond postseason play, it has witnessed numerous historic moments, such as J.D. Drew's remarkable 1997 season and the many victories of coach Mike Martin. The venue also hosts the annual Florida State football spring game and has been used for community events and high school baseball championships.

Renovations and upgrades

A major renovation project from 2004 to 2005 significantly expanded the stadium's capacity and improved fan amenities, adding the University Center Club and additional suite level. A comprehensive multi-phase upgrade began in 2013, which included the construction of a new player development facility with enhanced locker rooms, training areas, and coaches' offices. This phase also saw improvements to the stadium's exterior facade, entry plazas, and concessions infrastructure. Further work completed by 2015 focused on upgrading seating, widening concourses, and installing a new sound system and LED lighting to meet modern broadcast standards for events televised by ACC Network and ESPN.
