DeVos Place

DeVos Place. It is a major convention and exhibition center located in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. The facility, named for prominent local philanthropists Richard DeVos and Helen DeVos, serves as a cornerstone for large-scale events in West Michigan. Operated by ASM Global, it anchors the city's urban entertainment district alongside venues like Van Andel Arena.

History

The development of the facility was driven by a public-private partnership seeking to enhance the region's economic vitality through expanded convention capabilities. Its construction was approved by the Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority, a governing body established to oversee major public venues. The center opened in 2004 on the site of a former exhibition hall, significantly increasing the city's capacity to host trade shows and conferences. This project was part of a broader revitalization of the Grand River waterfront, complementing other civic investments like the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum.

Facilities

The complex features over 162,000 square feet of contiguous exhibition space, divisible into multiple halls to accommodate events of varying sizes. It includes a 40,000-square-foot ballroom, one of the largest in Michigan, and 28 dedicated meeting rooms. The architecture integrates with the adjacent JW Marriott Grand Rapids hotel via a climate-controlled skywalk. A distinctive feature is the 2,400-seat Performance Hall, which hosts theatrical productions, concerts, and lectures, and is configured with excellent acoustics designed by renowned firm Jaffe Holden.

Events

The venue hosts a diverse annual calendar, including the popular Grand Rapids Boat Show, the Michigan Restaurant & Lodging Show, and the ArtPrize competition. It is a regular site for major consumer expos, corporate meetings for companies like Amway and Steelcase, and political gatherings such as the Michigan Republican Party state convention. The Performance Hall has presented performances by the Grand Rapids Symphony, touring Broadway series like Wicked, and speakers from the Ford Presidential Foundation's lecture series.

Management and operations

Day-to-day management is contracted to ASM Global, one of the world's leading venue management companies. Oversight and strategic direction are provided by the Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority, whose board includes appointees from Kent County and the City of Grand Rapids. The facility works in close collaboration with Experience Grand Rapids, the regional convention and visitors bureau, to attract and book events. Financial operations are supported through a combination of user fees, public funding, and naming rights contributions.

Economic impact

Studies commissioned by Experience Grand Rapids indicate the center generates significant direct spending for local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and retail establishments in the downtown core. It supports thousands of hospitality industry jobs annually and contributes to the municipal tax base through hotel tax and sales tax revenues. The venue's ability to attract regional and national conventions enhances the profile of West Michigan as a business destination, creating spillover benefits for other cultural institutions like the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.
