The origins of the centre trace back to 1958 with the opening of a small radiotherapy unit at the original Clatterbridge Hospital site in Bebington, Wirral. Its establishment was a response to the growing need for specialised cancer care in the North West region. A significant expansion occurred in the 1990s, consolidating services from other local hospitals to form a dedicated cancer centre. A landmark development was the opening of a major new facility in Liverpool's Knowledge Quarter in 2020, anchoring the service in a leading academic and health district alongside the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and the University of Liverpool.
