Chris Klieman is an American college football coach who is the head coach for the Kansas State Wildcats. He previously served as the head coach at North Dakota State, where he led the Bison to four FCS national championships. Chris Klieman was born in Waterloo, Iowa, and attended Columbus Catholic High School. He played college football as a defensive back for the Northern Iowa Panthers under head coach Earle Bruce. At the University of Northern Iowa, he earned a degree in physical education while playing for the Panthers in the Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference, now known as the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
Klieman began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, the University of Northern Iowa, in 1990. His first full-time role came as a defensive backs coach at Western Illinois under coach Randy Ball. He returned to Cedar Falls in 1997, eventually rising to assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the Northern Iowa Panthers. In 2011, he joined Craig Bohl's staff at North Dakota State as defensive coordinator, helping the Bison win three consecutive FCS national titles. He succeeded Bohl as head coach in 2014, leading the program to four national championships and earning two Eddie Robinson Award honors. In December 2018, he was named the 35th head coach of the Kansas State Wildcats, succeeding Bill Snyder. At Kansas State, he won the Big 12 Conference championship in 2022, defeating the TCU Horned Frogs in the 2022 Big 12 Championship Game, and was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year.
As head coach at North Dakota State from 2014 to 2018, Klieman compiled a 69–6 record, including a perfect 8–0 mark in the FCS playoffs. His teams won five Missouri Valley Football Conference titles. At Kansas State, his record includes appearances in the Liberty Bowl, the Texas Bowl, and the Pop-Tarts Bowl. His overall collegiate head coaching record through the 2023 season stands at 108–34.
