Canungra

Canungra Canungra is a small town in the Scenic Rim Region of Queensland, Australia. It is located in the City of Gold Coast local government area, approximately 35 kilometres (22 mi) southwest of Gold Coast and 58 kilometres (36 mi) south of Brisbane. The town is situated near the Lamington National Park and the McPherson Range.

History

The area around Canungra has been home to the Yugambeh people for thousands of years. The name "Canungra" is derived from the Yugambeh word "Canungra", which means "place of the black snake". In 1824, the area was explored by Hamilton Hume and William Howitt, and in the late 19th century, it became a popular destination for logging and farming. The town was officially gazetted in 1883.

The Canungra railway line was opened in 1885, which connected the town to Southport and Brisbane. The railway line played a significant role in the development of the town, facilitating the transportation of goods and people.

Canungra is situated in a valley surrounded by the McPherson Range and the Lamington National Park.
