Cairo Metro. The Cairo Metro is a rapid transit system serving the Greater Cairo region in Egypt. It is the first of its kind in Africa and the Arab world, playing a crucial role in alleviating the severe traffic congestion in one of the world's most populous metropolitan areas. Operated by the National Authority for Tunnels, the network integrates with other forms of public transport, including the Cairo Tram and the Alexandria Tram.

History

The system's origins trace back to studies in the 1970s, with construction beginning in 1982 under a major contract with a consortium led by the French company Alstom. The inaugural line, Line 1, partially repurposing an older Heliopolis railway, opened in 1987, connecting Helwan to El Marg. Subsequent development was rapid, with Line 2 launching in 1996 to serve areas like Giza and Mohandessin, crossing under the Nile River via a deep tunnel. The most recent addition, Line 3, opened in phases starting in 2012, linking Cairo International Airport to the northwestern suburbs, with significant construction support from Arab Contractors and funding from international institutions like the European Investment Bank and the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

Network

The network comprises three primary lines spanning over 93 kilometers and serving 74 stations. Line 1 runs north-south from El Marg to Helwan, passing through key districts such as Ramses Square and Sadat Station. Line 2 operates on an east-west axis from Shubra El-Kheima to El Mounib, with major interchanges at Sadat Station and Attaba. Line 3 extends from Cairo International Airport in the northeast to Kit Kat and eventually Mohandessin, intersecting with the other lines at Attaba and Nasser Station. The stations feature diverse architectural styles, from the utilitarian designs of early stations to the modern aesthetics seen in Cairo Festival City and the Al-Azhar University-adjacent stations.

Operations

Daily operations are managed by the National Authority for Tunnels, with stringent safety and scheduling protocols. The system operates from early morning until midnight, with peak headways of under three minutes on the busiest sections. Fares are integrated via a contactless smart card system, and the network interfaces with major transportation hubs like Ramses Railway Station and the Cairo Bus network. Security is overseen by the Ministry of Interior, with personnel stationed throughout the system. Significant operational challenges include managing extreme passenger loads during events like Eid al-Fitr and maintaining service amidst the dense urban fabric of Islamic Cairo and Giza.

Rolling stock

The fleet consists of multiple generations of trains, primarily supplied by Alstom and Hyundai Rotem. Line 1 uses older Alstom steel-wheel trains, while Line 2 and Line 3 operate with more modern, air-conditioned units from the same manufacturer. A recent major acquisition includes 256 new cars from Hyundai Rotem for Line 3's expansion phases. Maintenance is conducted at large depots located in Helwan, El Marg, and Imbaba, ensuring the reliability of one of the busiest metro systems in the Middle East.

Future expansion

An ambitious expansion plan is underway to significantly extend the network's reach and capacity. Ongoing work on Line 3 will push its western terminus to Cairo University and eventually Mohandessin. A entirely new Line 4 is under development, planned to connect the Giza Pyramid area with New Cairo, receiving funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency. Furthermore, a proposed Line 6 and extensions to Line 1 are in advanced planning stages. These projects are part of a broader national strategy to develop transport infrastructure, complementing other mega-projects like the New Administrative Capital and the Egyptian National Railways modernization.
