History

The site's transport history dates to the 19th century with the opening of the original Bradford Exchange railway station by the Great Northern Railway. This station was later rebuilt and renamed in the 1970s as part of a comprehensive redevelopment plan for central Bradford. The current integrated bus and rail facility, designed with a distinctive brutalist architectural style, was officially opened in the early 1970s. This period also saw significant changes to the local rail network, including the closure of lines such as the Great Northern's route to Adwalton and the reduction of services following the Beeching cuts. The interchange has undergone several refurbishments, with a major redevelopment in 2003 which modernized the bus concourse and improved accessibility throughout the complex.

Description

The interchange is a multi-level structure located in the Bradford City Centre, close to major landmarks like Bradford City Hall and the National Science and Media Museum. The rail station is situated on an elevated section, with four through platforms serving the Calder Valley line and the Airedale line. Below this, the expansive bus station features eight main stands under a large canopy, with additional stands for local services. The building's design is characterized by its use of concrete and glass, with a large central atrium providing natural light to the bus concourse. Passenger facilities include ticket offices operated by Northern Trains and West Yorkshire Metro, waiting areas, retail units, and real-time information displays for both bus and rail services.

Services

Rail services are operated exclusively by Northern Trains, providing frequent connections along key routes. Primary destinations include Leeds, Manchester Victoria, Blackpool North, and York, via the Calder Valley line. Additional services run to Ilkley and Skipton on the Airedale line. The bus station is a major hub for operators including First West Yorkshire, Arriva Yorkshire, and Transdev Blazefield. Key bus routes provide extensive coverage across the Bradford district, with express services to Leeds, Halifax, and Huddersfield, as well as local services to areas like Shipley, Bingley, and Keighley. The interchange is also served by National Express coach services to destinations such as London and Glasgow.

Future development

Proposals for the site are closely tied to the wider Northern Powerhouse Rail initiative and the potential revival of the Bradford Crossrail project, which aims to improve direct rail connectivity to Leeds. A central proposal under consideration is the complete redevelopment or relocation of the interchange to accommodate new high-speed services, potentially as part of the High Speed 2 network extension. West Yorkshire Combined Authority has conducted feasibility studies for creating a new through station to replace the current terminal layout, improving operational efficiency. These plans are also integrated with the Bradford City Centre masterplan, which envisages enhanced pedestrian links and mixed-use development around the transport hub.
