Bournemouth International Centre

Bournemouth International Centre. Commonly known as the BIC, it is a major conference, exhibition, and entertainment venue located on the seafront in Bournemouth, Dorset. Opened in 1984, the complex has become a landmark of the town's economy and cultural scene, hosting a diverse array of events from political party conferences to international music concerts. Operated by the trust BH Live on behalf of the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council, it forms a key part of the town's tourism and business infrastructure alongside the adjacent Pavilion Theatre.

History

The centre was conceived in the late 1970s as part of a broader strategy to boost tourism and business investment in Bournemouth, which was already a popular seaside resort since the Victorian era. Designed by the renowned architectural and engineering firm Arup Associates, construction began in 1982 and the venue was officially opened by The Queen in 1984. Its modernist design, featuring a distinctive curved glass facade overlooking Bournemouth Beach and the English Channel, was a significant departure from the town's traditional architecture. A major £22 million refurbishment and expansion project took place between 2010 and 2012, overseen by architects Capita Symonds, which modernised its facilities and improved accessibility to meet contemporary demands for large-scale events.

Facilities

The venue comprises three main, flexible auditoria: the Windsor Hall, the Purbeck Hall, and the Poole Hall, which can be configured for conferences, exhibitions, or seated events. The Windsor Hall is the largest space, capable of hosting major concerts or political gatherings, and is equipped with advanced audio and lighting systems. The complex also includes numerous meeting rooms, a dedicated registration area, and full catering services managed by in-house teams. It is directly connected to the historic Pavilion Theatre, allowing for combined events, and its seafront location offers delegates views of the Bournemouth Pier and the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.

Events

The BIC has a long history of hosting the annual conferences of major UK political parties, including the Conservative Party and the Liberal Democrats. Its event calendar is highly diverse, featuring international conventions, trade shows like the Air Festival headquarters, and consumer exhibitions. The venue is also a key stop on national tours for prominent musical artists across genres, from Elton John and The Who to Kylie Minogue, and has hosted televised events such as the BBC's Children in Need telethon. It regularly stages sporting events, award ceremonies, and theatrical productions.

Management and operations

The centre is owned by the unitary local authority but has been operated since 2010 by the charitable trust BH Live, which also manages other local leisure assets including the Pavilion Theatre and the Oceanarium. This operational model aims to deliver commercial sustainability while supporting the council's strategic objectives for the local economy. Day-to-day management involves a large team overseeing event coordination, technical production, hospitality, and marketing, working closely with promoters like Live Nation and SJM Concerts.

Transport and access

The venue is centrally located on Bournemouth's Undercliff Drive, with excellent public transport links. Bournemouth railway station is approximately a 15-minute walk away, with regular services operated by South Western Railway to London Waterloo and other destinations. Numerous local bus routes serve the adjacent Travel Interchange, providing connections across Dorset and to Poole and Christchurch. For those driving, the centre is easily accessed from the A338 and has substantial on-site parking; it is also a short walk from the Bournemouth Pier and the town's central Square.
