Blacksburg Wildcats. The Blacksburg Wildcats are the athletic program representing Blacksburg High School in Blacksburg, Virginia. Competing in the River Ridge District under the governance of the Virginia High School League, the Wildcats field teams in numerous sports including football, basketball, soccer, and track and field. The program has a long history of competitive success, producing numerous collegiate athletes and claiming multiple state championships across various sports.

History

The athletic program traces its origins to the founding of Blacksburg High School in 1958, with teams initially competing in the New River District. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the Wildcats established rivalries with nearby schools like the Christiansburg Blue Demons and the Radford Bobcats. A significant shift occurred in 1990 when the school joined the River Ridge District, intensifying competition against programs such as the Cave Spring Knights and the Salem Spartans. The late 1990s and early 2000s saw major facility upgrades, including renovations to the school's gymnasium and football field, coinciding with increased success in VHSL Class AA and later VHSL Class 3 competitions. The program's history is deeply intertwined with the growth of Virginia Tech and the broader Blacksburg community.

Notable seasons

The 2004 football season was historic, as the team, led by coach David Crist, finished the regular season undefeated and advanced to the VHSL Group AA Division 3 state semifinals. In 2010, the boys' cross country team, coached by James DeMarco, captured the VHSL Group AA state championship. The 2015 girls' swimming team dominated the River Ridge District meet and placed second at the VHSL Class 4A state championships. More recently, the 2022 boys' soccer team, under coach Travis Williams, achieved a perfect record in district play and made a deep run in the VHSL Class 3 state tournament, defeating rivals like the Hidden Valley Titans and the Lord Botetourt Cavaliers.

Championships and achievements

The Wildcats have secured multiple team state championships sanctioned by the Virginia High School League. Major titles include the 2010 VHSL Group AA boys' cross country championship and the 2018 VHSL Class 3 girls' track and field outdoor championship. The program has also won numerous River Ridge District tournament championships across all sports and several VHSL Region 3D titles. Individual athletes have earned prestigious honors such as the VHSL Group AA Player of the Year in basketball and Gatorade Player of the Year awards for Virginia. The program is also recognized for academic achievements, consistently earning the VHSL Scholastic Award.

Notable players

Several Wildcats alumni have competed at the collegiate and professional levels. Football standout Mike Young played for the Virginia Tech Hokies and later in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints. Basketball player Jessica Pellechio continued her career at the University of Richmond and later played professionally in Europe. Soccer star Luis Argudo played collegiately for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons and was selected in the MLS SuperDraft by Columbus Crew SC. Distance runner Andrew Gaiser was a multiple-time NCAA Division I All-American for the University of North Carolina.

Home venues

The primary athletic facilities are located on the campus of Blacksburg High School. Bill Brown Stadium, named for a longtime coach, hosts football, soccer, and lacrosse games. The school's main gymnasium, known as the Wildcats Den, is the home court for basketball and volleyball. The swimming and diving teams compete at the War Memorial Gymnasium pool at Virginia Tech. For track and field, the team utilizes the all-weather track at the high school, which has hosted numerous River Ridge District and VHSL Region 3D championship meets.
