Bill Posey

Bill Posey is an American politician serving as the U.S. Representative for Florida's 8th congressional district since 2009. A member of the Republican Party, his district encompasses much of the Space Coast, including Brevard County and Indian River County. Prior to his federal service, Posey served in both chambers of the Florida Legislature, representing parts of Brevard and Indian River counties.

Early life and education

William Joseph Posey was born in Washington, D.C., and moved to Rockledge, Florida, as a child. He attended local public schools before earning an Associate of Arts degree from Brevard Community College. His early career was in the real estate and construction sectors, where he worked as a broker and founded his own company, Posey and Company Realtors, in Cocoa.

Early career

Posey's political career began at the local level, serving on the Rockledge City Council from 1976 to 1986, including a term as mayor. He was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1992, where he served until 2000, focusing on issues related to space exploration and economic development pertinent to the Cape Canaveral region. In 2000, he was elected to the Florida Senate, representing the 24th district, where he chaired the Committee on Banking and Insurance and served on the Committee on Commerce and Economic Opportunities.

U.S. House of Representatives

Posey was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2008, succeeding retiring Republican Dave Weldon. He has consistently won re-election in the Republican-leaning district. In Congress, he has served on the Committee on Financial Services and the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, where he has been a vocal advocate for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Kennedy Space Center. He co-founded the Congressional Space Power Caucus and has sponsored legislation like the Space Frontier Act aimed at promoting commercial spaceflight.
