Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Bibliotheca Alexandrina. A major library and cultural complex located on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea in Alexandria, Egypt. It stands as a commemoration of the famed Library of Alexandria of antiquity and was inaugurated in 2002 under the auspices of the Government of Egypt and UNESCO. The institution functions as a modern center of learning, dialogue, and research, aiming to recapture the spirit of the ancient library as a beacon of knowledge for the 21st century.

History and conception

The project to revive the ancient library was championed in the late 1980s by a committee at the University of Alexandria, gaining significant support from Hosni Mubarak, then President of Egypt, and UNESCO. An international architectural competition was launched in 1988, won by the Norwegian firm Snøhetta. Funding was secured through a global partnership involving the Arab Republic of Egypt, several Gulf states including Saudi Arabia and Iraq, and donations from nations like France, Italy, and Japan. Construction began in 1995 on a site near the Eastern Harbour, close to the location of the ancient library and the submerged ruins of the Pharos of Alexandria. The inauguration ceremony in 2002 was attended by numerous heads of state and dignitaries, symbolizing its international significance.

Architecture and design

The building's striking design by Snøhetta is a modern architectural icon. Its most distinctive feature is a giant, tilting circular disc representing the sun, clad in Aswan granite carved with characters from the world's scripts. The main reading room is housed beneath this disc, flooded with natural light from a massive glass-paneled roof angled toward the sea. The complex includes a planetarium shaped like a geode, a conference center, and several specialized museums. The exterior wall is faced with granite from Aswan and features inscriptions from global civilizations, while the interior spaces are organized to facilitate both public engagement and scholarly research.

Collections and departments

The library's vast collections aim to encompass the totality of human knowledge. It holds millions of books, including special collections like a donated replica of the ancient library's collection and the personal archives of Nobel Prize laureate Naguib Mahfouz. Key departments include the Manuscripts Museum, which houses rare items like a copy of the Book of the Dead and early Qur'anic texts, and the Sadat Museum, dedicated to former President Anwar Sadat. Other major units are the Alexandrina International Museum of Calligraphy, the History of Science Museum, and the Planetarium Science Center, alongside extensive digital archives and conservation laboratories.

Cultural and educational role

The institution is a vibrant hub for cultural and intellectual exchange, hosting thousands of events annually. It organizes major international conferences, such as the World Youth Forum, and regular public lectures featuring prominent figures from fields like literature and science. Its educational programs range from workshops for children at the Planetarium Science Center to specialized training in digital preservation and archival science. The library also runs significant cultural festivals, including the Alexandria Mediterranean Film Festival, and maintains active publishing imprints that produce scholarly works and cultural periodicals, contributing to the intellectual life of the Arab world and beyond.

Governance and international relations

Governance is overseen by a Board of Trustees comprising eminent Egyptian and international figures from academia, politics, and culture, with day-to-day operations managed by a Director-General, a position long held by scholar Ismail Serageldin and currently by Ahmed Zayed. The library maintains formal partnerships with major global institutions like the British Library, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and the Library of Congress. It is a founding member of the World Digital Library project in collaboration with UNESCO and participates in numerous international networks dedicated to cultural heritage preservation and open access to knowledge, reinforcing its status as a global institution.
