History

The area was originally inhabited by the Lenape people before European settlement began in the early 18th century, primarily by German Palatines and other Germanic peoples. Key early figures included Conrad Weiser, a diplomat between colonial governments and Native American tribes, whose homestead, the Conrad Weiser Homestead, is a historic site. The county was officially formed in 1752, with Reading laid out by Thomas and Richard Penn, sons of William Penn. During the American Revolutionary War, important supplies were forged at sites like Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, and the Philadelphia Campaign passed through the region. The 19th century saw rapid industrial growth, fueled by the Schuylkill River and the Reading Railroad, making the area a national center for iron and textile production. The Reading Railroad's influence is memorialized in the board game Monopoly.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 866 square miles, with the Schuylkill River flowing southeast through its center. The southern portion is part of the Piedmont region, featuring fertile farmland, while the northern third is dominated by the forested Blue Mountain, a terminal ridge of the Appalachian Mountains. Demographics

As of the 2020 United States census, the population was 428,849. The racial makeup was diverse, with a significant Hispanic or Latino population, largely of Puerto Rican descent, concentrated in Reading. The county has a strong Pennsylvania Dutch cultural legacy, with many residents claiming German ancestry. Other prominent ethnic groups include those of Irish, Italian, and Polish descent. Religious affiliation is varied, with notable communities of Lutherans, Reformed, Roman Catholics, and Anabaptist groups like the Mennonites and Amish.

Economy

Historically dominated by heavy industry and manufacturing, the economy has diversified significantly.
