Berklee College of Music

Berklee College of Music is a private music college in Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 1945 by Lawrence Berk as Schillinger House, it is the world's largest independent college of contemporary music. History

The school was founded in 1945 by Lawrence Berk as Schillinger House, named in honor of his teacher, music theorist Joseph Schillinger. Initially offering instruction in the Schillinger System, it quickly expanded its curriculum. In 1954, the institution was renamed Berklee School of Music after Berk's son, Lee Berk, and received accreditation to grant degrees. A pivotal moment came in 1966 when pioneering educator and pianist John LaPorta joined the faculty, significantly shaping its jazz department. The college formally became Berklee College of Music in 1970. In 2016, it merged with the Boston Conservatory, forming Boston Conservatory at Berklee. Under the leadership of presidents like Roger H.
