History

The development of the resort was spearheaded by Steve Wynn, who envisioned a property that would elevate the luxury standards of the Las Vegas Strip. To make room for the new complex, the historic Dunes hotel and its golf course were demolished in 1993. The Bellagio opened on October 15, 1998, at a cost of approximately $1.6 billion, becoming the most expensive hotel-casino ever built at the time. Following the acquisition of Mirage Resorts by MGM Grand Inc. in 2000, ownership transferred to MGM Resorts International, which continues to operate the property. The resort has since undergone several renovations to maintain its premier status, including a major refresh of its casino floor and guest rooms.

Designed by architect Jon Jerde, the resort's aesthetic is inspired by the Italian village of Bellagio. The exterior features an eight-acre artificial lake showcasing the renowned Fountains of Bellagio, a choreographed water performance set to music and light. The interior is dominated by the "Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens," which undergoes elaborate seasonal transformations. The Bellagio is particularly noted for its high-limit gaming areas, including the "Bobby's Room" poker salon, named for poker legend Bobby Baldwin, which hosts some of the world's highest-stakes cash games. It has been a frequent venue for prestigious poker tournaments, including events on the World Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker Circuit. It features prominently in the 2001 remake of Ocean's Eleven, where the characters plot a heist targeting its vault. The resort and its fountains appear in movies like The Hangover and 21, and in television series such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. The poker room and its high-stakes games are depicted in various poker documentaries and were a regular feature on the television show High Stakes Poker.
