Beşiktaş J.K. is a prominent Turkish professional sports club based in the Beşiktaş district of Istanbul. Founded in 1903, it is the oldest active sports club in Turkey and is best known for its highly successful football department, which competes in the top-tier Süper Lig. The club has a storied history, a massive and passionate fanbase known as Çarşı, and a fierce rivalry with other major Istanbul clubs, forming one leg of the intense Istanbul derbies.

History

The club was established in the Ottoman Empire era in the Beşiktaş district, initially focusing on gymnastics before formally registering its football branch in 1911. Early matches were played against crews of foreign naval ships docked in the Bosphorus. Following the founding of the Turkish Republic, the club became a founding member of the Istanbul Football League and later the nationwide Turkish Football Federation. A golden era arrived under the management of Ljubiša Spajić in the late 1950s and early 1960s, with the team winning multiple Istanbul League titles. The club claimed its first Süper Lig championship in the 1959–60 season and achieved a historic feat by winning the league undefeated in the 1991–92 season, a record matched later by Galatasaray S.K. and Trabzonspor. In European competitions, Beşiktaş reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League in 1987 and won the UEFA Cup group stage in 2000. The 21st century has seen continued domestic success, including a memorable 2015–16 Süper Lig title won on the final day, and significant runs in the UEFA Europa League.

Stadiums

The club's long-time home was the iconic BJK İnönü Stadium, situated uniquely between the Bosphorus strait and Dolmabahçe Palace. This historic ground, opened in 1947, hosted numerous important matches until its demolition. In 2016, the club moved into the modern, state-of-the-art Vodafone Park, built on the same site. This stadium, with its signature undulating roof and proximity to the water, is renowned for its electrifying atmosphere, particularly during European nights against clubs like Liverpool F.C. and FC Bayern Munich. The club's training facilities are located at the Nevzat Demir Tesisleri complex.

Crest and colours

The club's crest has evolved from a simple black-and-white flag to incorporate the Turkish flag, reflecting its deep national symbolism. The current emblem features a black eagle, a reference to the club's nickname "Kara Kartallar" (Black Eagles), superimposed over a red background with a white star and crescent. The team's traditional colours are black and white, from which its primary nickname derives. These colours are said to have been adopted in mourning for the loss of Ottoman lands in the Balkan Wars, though this origin is debated among historians.

Supporters and rivalries

The club's supporters, collectively known as Çarşı, are famed for their passionate, continuous, and politically engaged support, creating one of the most intimidating atmospheres in European football at Vodafone Park. The club's most intense rivalry is with fellow Istanbul giants Galatasaray S.K. and Fenerbahçe S.K., with matches between these teams constituting the ferocious Intercontinental Derby and Kıtalararası Derbi. These derbies are among the most heated in world football. Additional strong rivalries exist with Trabzonspor from the Black Sea Region and Bursaspor.

Honours

The club's trophy cabinet is among the most decorated in Turkey. Domestically, it has won the Süper Lig championship multiple times, including the historic unbeaten title. It has also claimed numerous Turkish Cup and Turkish Super Cup victories. In European football, while yet to win a major UEFA competition, the club has secured the now-defunct UEFA Cup group stage and the Balkans Cup. Notable individual player achievements include the Süper Lig Golden Boot won by stars like Mario Gómez and Cenk Tosun.

Throughout its history, the club has been home to many legendary Turkish and international footballers. Iconic figures include the prolific striker Şenol Birol, midfielder Metin Tekin, and goalkeeper Rasim Kara. In recent decades, high-profile signings like Ricardo Quaresma, Demba Ba, Vincent Aboubakar, and Alexandre Pato have graced the squad.
