Banaras Hindu University

Banaras Hindu University. Established in 1916, it is one of the largest residential universities in Asia and a premier institution of higher education in India. Founded through the pioneering efforts of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya and Annie Besant, the university was envisioned as a center for the synthesis of Indian knowledge systems with modern scientific thought. It has since grown into a multidisciplinary institution with a sprawling campus in the historic city of Varanasi.

History

The establishment of the university was a seminal event in the Indian independence movement, conceived as a national institution free from colonial control. The movement gained momentum with the support of prominent figures like Rameshwar Singh of Darbhanga and received a significant land grant from the Kashi Naresh. The foundation stone was laid in 1916 by Lord Hardinge, the then Viceroy of India.
