BMW X1

BMW X1 is a subcompact luxury crossover SUV produced by the German automaker BMW since 2009. It was the first model in the brand's X Series lineup to be offered in a front-wheel-drive layout, based on the UKL2 platform shared with other models like the MINI Countryman. Initially offered with a range of N20 and N47 engines, it was produced exclusively at the BMW Group Plant Leipzig in Germany. A facelift in 2012 introduced revised styling and the new xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system as an option across most markets.

Second generation (F48)

The second-generation model, known as the F48, represented a fundamental redesign when it premiered in 2015. It transitioned to the front-wheel-drive-based UKL2 platform, a move that shared components with the MINI brand and the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. This generation expanded the engine lineup to include the B38 three-cylinder and B48 four-cylinder units, and later introduced the BMW X1 xDrive25Le plug-in hybrid variant in China. Production was globalized, occurring at plants in Regensburg, Born, and Shenyang through BMW Brilliance.

Third generation (U11)

Unveiled in 2022, the third-generation U11 BMW X1 features a more angular design language and an increased focus on digital technology. It is built on an updated version of the FAAR platform and offers a fully electric variant called the iX1. The interior is dominated by the BMW Curved Display running the latest BMW Operating System 8. Production commenced at the BMW Group Plant Regensburg, with the electric iX1 model assembled there alongside vehicles with gasoline, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Engines and specifications

Throughout its production, the BMW X1 has been offered with a wide array of internal combustion engines, including turbocharged three-cylinder, four-cylinder, and six-cylinder units from the B and N families. Transmission options have included manual, automatic, and steptronic gearboxes. The adoption of the UKL2 platform enabled the introduction of front-wheel drive configurations, while the xDrive system remained available. The iX1 model features a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup developed under BMW i sub-brand principles.
