History

The history of Aumühle is deeply intertwined with the Sachsenwald, which was a personal gift from Emperor Wilhelm I to Chancellor Otto von Bismarck in 1871. The Bismarck family established their local seat at nearby Friedrichsruh, making the area a center of political and social influence. The settlement itself originated from a water mill (Mühle) on the Aue stream, from which it derives its name. In the late 19th century, the construction of the Berlin-Hamburg Railway with a station at Aumühle improved connectivity, facilitating its growth. The area remained a retreat for the Bismarck family, and the former residence of Prince Otto von Bismarck, the chancellor's grandson, is located here. Following World War II, Aumühle became part of the newly formed state of Schleswig-Holstein within the Federal Republic of Germany.
