Ascension Seton

Ascension Seton. It is a nonprofit healthcare system and a key clinical partner of the Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. Part of the national Ascension ministry, the system operates multiple hospitals and clinics across the Central Texas region. History

The system originated from the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, who founded the original Seton Infirmary in Austin in 1902. This facility was named for Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first native-born American saint canonized by the Catholic Church. Over the decades, the organization expanded, opening Seton Medical Center Austin in 1975 as a major replacement hospital. A significant evolution occurred in 1999 when it joined the Daughters of Charity National Health System, which later became part of the national Ascension system. The 21st century saw substantial growth, including a pivotal partnership announced in 2011 with The University of Texas at Austin to help establish the Dell Medical School.

Key facilities include the academic flagship Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas, which opened in 2017 adjacent to the Dell Medical School. The system also operates the region's only dedicated children's hospital, Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas, which opened in 2007 and is verified as a Level I pediatric trauma center. Additional specialized sites include the Seton Shoal Creek Hospital for behavioral health and numerous Ascension Medical Group clinics throughout the community.
