André Sayegh

André Sayegh is an American politician serving as the mayor of Paterson, New Jersey, a position he has held since 2018. A member of the Democratic Party, he is the first Arab-American mayor of the city, which is one of the most diverse in the United States. Sayegh's administration has focused on economic revitalization, public safety initiatives, and leveraging Paterson's historical significance as a founding industrial city.

Early life and education

André Sayegh was born and raised in Paterson's South Paterson neighborhood, a community with a significant Arab-American population. He is the son of immigrants from Lebanon, and his upbringing in this culturally rich environment deeply influenced his commitment to public service. Sayegh attended Paramus Catholic High School before pursuing higher education at Saint Peter's University in Jersey City, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. He later obtained a Master of Arts in Diplomacy and International Relations from Seton Hall University's School of Diplomacy and International Relations.

Political career

Sayegh began his political career in 2001 when he was elected to represent the city's 6th Ward on the Paterson City Council, becoming the first Arab-American to serve on the council. During his tenure, he advocated for neighborhood improvements and served as the council president. He later served as an at-large councilman, broadening his focus to citywide issues. Prior to his election as mayor, Sayegh also worked as an educator, teaching social studies at Eastside High School and serving as an administrator for the Paterson Public Schools district.

Electoral history

Sayegh first ran for mayor in 2010, finishing second in a crowded field. He ran again in 2014, placing a close second in the election ultimately won by Joey Torres. He secured the mayoralty in the 2018 election, winning a decisive victory in a six-candidate race that included council members Michael Jackson and Alex Mendez. Sayegh was re-elected in 2022, defeating a challenge from former councilwoman Lilisa Mimms and again securing broad support across the city's diverse wards.

André Sayegh is married to Farah Sayegh, and the couple has three children. He is a practicing member of the Maronite Catholic Church and is fluent in Arabic. Sayegh is an avid reader of history and a proponent of Paterson's heritage, often citing the city's role in the American Industrial Revolution and its connection to figures like Alexander Hamilton. He maintains active involvement in local community organizations and remains a resident of the South Paterson neighborhood where he was raised.
