History

The company was formed in 2008 by a consortium named AirTanker Ltd, which included major aerospace and defense entities such as Airbus, Cobham, Rolls-Royce, and Thales Group. Its creation was a direct result of the UK government's Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft procurement, aimed at replacing the aging fleet of Vickers VC10 and Lockheed L-1011 TriStar tankers operated by the Royal Air Force. The Private Finance Initiative contract, valued at approximately £10.5 billion over 27 years, was signed with the UK Ministry of Defence in March 2008. Initial operational capability was achieved in 2014, with the first aircraft, named Voyager in RAF service, entering full service from its main operating base at RAF Brize Norton. The programme marked a significant shift towards private sector provision of core military capabilities.

Fleet

The operational fleet consists of fourteen Airbus A330-200 aircraft converted into the Airbus A330 MRTT configuration. These aircraft are registered in the United Kingdom and bear a distinctive silver and red livery. The fleet is split into a core group of nine aircraft dedicated to Royal Air Force tasks and a commercial group of five available for charter. Each aircraft is equipped with both a Flight Refueling Limited Mk.32B under-wing hose-and-drogue pod system and an advanced Airbus Military Aerial Refueling Boom System, making them compatible with a wide range of receiver aircraft including the Eurofighter Typhoon, Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, and Panavia Tornado. The aircraft are powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines and are maintained under a comprehensive support agreement with the consortium partners.

Operations

Primary operations are conducted from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, which serves as the main hub for crew training, maintenance, and mission planning. The company's key role is to provide round-the-clock Aerial refueling and strategic airlift support for the Royal Air Force, enabling global power projection and participation in NATO exercises and operations such as Operation Shader against ISIL. Beyond military refueling, the aircraft are routinely used for strategic passenger and cargo transport, Aeromedical evacuation, and support to other government departments. The commercial group of aircraft is also available for wet-lease services to other air forces and organizations, having supported operations for the French Air and Space Force and the Royal Australian Air Force.

Customers and contracts

The principal customer is the UK Ministry of Defence, under the enduring Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft service contract. This agreement covers the provision of aircraft, crews, maintenance, and training. Secondary customers include other NATO member states and allied governments that charter aircraft for specific missions or training exercises. The company has provided refueling support for the French Air and Space Force's Dassault Rafale and Royal Australian Air Force aircraft during deployments to Europe. It also holds a Civil Aviation Authority (United Kingdom) Air Operator's Certificate, allowing it to undertake commercial passenger and cargo flights for other entities when not required for core defense tasks.

The operation has maintained a strong safety record since its inception. There have been no major accidents or hull-loss incidents involving its Airbus A330 MRTT fleet. Minor incidents have included technical malfunctions and precautionary diversions, which are typical for high-tempo military aviation operations. All operations are conducted under strict regulatory oversight from both the Civil Aviation Authority (United Kingdom) and Royal Air Force safety authorities, with continuous airworthiness managed through the integrated support contract with the original equipment manufacturers.
