History

The company was created in 2008 following the selection of the AirTanker consortium as the preferred bidder for the Ministry of Defence's Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft requirement. This decision followed a lengthy and complex procurement process aimed at replacing the aging Vickers VC10 and Lockheed TriStar tankers. The Financial Close for the multi-billion-pound Private Finance Initiative contract was achieved in March 2008, marking the start of the 27-year service provision period. Initial operational capability was declared in 2012, with the first A330 MRTT aircraft, designated the Voyager KC2/KC3, entering service with No. 10 Squadron RAF and later No. 101 Squadron RAF at RAF Brize Norton.

Operations

Primary operations involve providing round-the-clock air-to-air refueling and strategic air transport for the Royal Air Force. Services are conducted from its main operating base at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, with aircraft often deployed to forward locations like RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus to support ongoing combat operations. The company's pilots and maintenance crews, many of whom are former RAF personnel, work under a Contractor logistics support model to ensure aircraft availability. Missions routinely support NATO exercises, such as those held in the Baltic states, and long-range transport flights for the British Army and Royal Navy.

Fleet

The entire operational fleet consists of fourteen Airbus A330 aircraft converted to the multi-role A330 MRTT standard. Nine of these are registered on the British Civil Aircraft Register and are owned and operated directly, featuring a dual-role configuration for both passenger transport and refueling. The remaining five aircraft are owned by the MoD and operated, maintained in a core military configuration optimized for tanking duties. All aircraft are powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines and are equipped with both a Flight Refuelling Limited Mk32B underwing hose-and-drogue pod system and an Airbus Aerial Refueling Boom System.

Contracts and partnerships

The foundational contract is the Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft Private Finance Initiative with the UK Ministry of Defence, which includes provision of aircraft, crews, maintenance, and RAF Brize Norton infrastructure. The company also holds a contract to provide VIP air transport for the British Royal Family and senior government figures using a specially configured Voyager, known as Voyager ZZ336. Key industrial partners within the original consortium included Airbus, Cobham, Rolls-Royce, and Thales.
