459th Air Refueling Wing

459th Air Refueling Wing is a United States Air Force Reserve unit stationed at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland. It operates the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker, providing critical aerial refueling support to U.S. and allied aircraft worldwide. The wing's history spans the Cold War and modern operations, including the Global War on Terrorism. As part of Air Mobility Command's Fourth Air Force, it is a key component of America's global reach and power projection capabilities.

History

The wing was first activated in 1953 as the 459th Troop Carrier Wing, a medium troop carrier unit, at Memphis Municipal Airport in Tennessee. Initially equipped with C-46 Commandos, it later transitioned to the Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar and participated in numerous Cold War exercises and airlift operations. The unit was inactivated in 1963 during a reorganization of reserve forces. It was redesignated and reactivated in its current role in 1994 at Andrews Air Force Base, now Joint Base Andrews, absorbing the resources of the inactivated 459th Military Airlift Wing. Since its reactivation, it has been continuously engaged in contingency operations, supporting missions in the Balkans, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and ongoing operations in U.S. Central Command's area of responsibility.

Assignments

The wing is assigned to the Fourth Air Force of Air Mobility Command. Its operational control falls under the 618th Air Operations Center (Tanker Airlift Control Center) for the execution of global aerial refueling and air mobility taskings. The wing regularly deploys expeditionary elements, known as Air Refueling Squadrons (Provisional), to forward locations such as Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar and RAF Mildenhall in the United Kingdom. These assignments involve close coordination with United States Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa, Pacific Air Forces, and Air Forces Central.

Components

The wing's operational flying component is the 756th Air Refueling Squadron, which is directly responsible for operating the KC-135 Stratotanker fleet. The 459th Operations Group provides command and control for all flying operations. Support functions are managed by the 459th Maintenance Group, the 459th Mission Support Group, and the 459th Aeromedical Staging Squadron. These groups ensure the readiness of personnel and equipment for worldwide deployment. The wing also maintains a formal association with the 316th Wing, the host active-duty unit at Joint Base Andrews, under the Air Force Reserve Command's Associate program.

Aircraft

Since its 1994 reactivation, the wing has exclusively flown the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker, a venerable air refueling aircraft. The primary variant operated is the KC-135R, which is equipped with modern CFM56 engines for improved performance and efficiency. These aircraft are capable of conducting air refueling using both the flying boom and probe-and-drogue systems, allowing them to support a wide array of receiver aircraft including U.S. Air Force fighters, bombers, and cargo planes, as well as aircraft from the United States Navy, United States Marine Corps, and NATO allies.

Decorations and campaigns

The wing has been recognized with multiple Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards for its service from 1999 to the present day. Its campaign participation spans several major military operations, including the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service campaigns. Unit personnel have earned ribbons for service in Afghanistan, the Iraqi Campaign, and the Inherent Resolve campaign. The wing's history also includes service credit for the Air Force Expeditionary Service Ribbon with Gold Border, reflecting its extensive deployment record in support of U.S. European Command and U.S. Central Command objectives.
