History

The wing was originally constituted as the 436th Troop Carrier Wing in 1949 at Arizona's Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. It transitioned to Strategic Air Command in 1955, flying the Douglas C-124 Globemaster II before moving to its current home at Dover Air Force Base in 1963. Throughout the Cold War, the unit was instrumental in global airlift, supporting operations like the Berlin Airlift follow-on efforts and the Vietnam War, where it airlifted critical supplies and personnel. Following the Gulf War, the wing transitioned to the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy, becoming a cornerstone of strategic airlift for United States European Command and United States Central Command contingencies. It participated in major humanitarian and combat operations, including Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, before converting to the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III fleet.

Previously, the wing operated the massive Lockheed C-5 Galaxy for decades, a key asset during the Cold War and Gulf War. Its historical fleet also included the Douglas C-124 Globemaster II and earlier transports like the Curtiss C-46 Commando. The transition to the C-17 enhanced capabilities for direct delivery into theater, supporting operations for United States Special Operations Command and rapid deployment for the 82nd Airborne Division.

The wing is assigned to the Twenty-First Air Force of Air Mobility Command.
