2nd Division (Vietnam)

2nd Division (Vietnam) is a major infantry formation of the Vietnam People's Army. Established during the final phase of the Vietnam War, it played a significant role in the Fall of Saigon and subsequent conflicts against Cambodian and Chinese forces. The division is currently part of the 4th Corps and is stationed in the central region of Vietnam.

History

The 2nd Division was officially formed in October 1974 in Quảng Bình Province, under the command of the Trường Sơn Command. Its creation was part of the North Vietnamese strategic buildup for the Ho Chi Minh Campaign, the final offensive of the Vietnam War. In early 1975, the division was rapidly deployed south, participating in key battles such as the Battle of Xuân Lộc, which opened the path to Saigon. Following the unification of Vietnam, the division was relocated to the northern border region. It saw extensive combat during the Sino-Vietnamese War in 1979, defending areas in Lạng Sơn Province against the People's Liberation Army. Subsequently, the division was deployed to the southwest, engaging in fierce fighting during the Cambodian–Vietnamese War against the Khmer Rouge regime throughout the 1980s.

Organization

As a standard infantry division within the Vietnam People's Army, the 2nd Division comprises three main infantry regiments: the 4th Regiment, 5th Regiment, and 6th Regiment. These are supported by specialized battalions including artillery, anti-aircraft, engineer, and reconnaissance units. The division is operationally assigned to the 4th Corps, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Military Region 5 headquarters. Its primary garrison and training areas are located in Quảng Nam Province, a strategic position in central Vietnam.

Commanders

Command of the division has been held by several notable officers of the Vietnam People's Army. Among its first and most prominent commanders was Nguyễn Chơn, who led the unit during the Ho Chi Minh Campaign and the Fall of Saigon. Other significant commanders include Hoàng Đan, who directed the division during the Sino-Vietnamese War, and Phan Hàm, who commanded during its deployment in Cambodia. These officers often later attained high ranks within the Ministry of Defence and the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army.

Engagements and campaigns

The division's combat history is defined by its participation in three major conflicts. Its first and most decisive campaign was the 1975 Ho Chi Minh Campaign, where it fought in the critical Battle of Xuân Lộc before advancing into Saigon. In February 1979, it was a principal unit defending Vietnam during the Sino-Vietnamese War, engaging in protracted battles in the Lạng Sơn sector. From the late 1970s through the 1980s, the division was a mainstay of the Vietnamese occupation of Cambodia, conducting numerous operations against Khmer Rouge strongholds in regions like Oddar Meanchey Province and along the Thai–Cambodian border.

Legacy and honors

The 2nd Division is recognized as one of the Vietnam People's Army's "steel and iron" units for its role in national unification and defense. It has been awarded the Hero of the People's Armed Forces title, the highest military honor in Vietnam, for its collective achievements during the Ho Chi Minh Campaign. The division is also a recipient of the Military Exploit Order and the Feat of Arms Order for its service in subsequent wars. Its history is commemorated in the Army Museum in Hanoi and in various regimental museums across Quảng Nam Province.
