The brigade was first constituted on 25 March 1966 at Fort Benning and activated in South Vietnam, where it became the largest aviation unit in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After its inactivation in 1973 following the Paris Peace Accords, the unit was reborn in 1986 at Fort Rucker (now Fort Novosel) to oversee flight training, a mission it continues today under the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command.

The brigade is organized under the United States Army Aviation Center of Excellence and commands several key training battalions. During the Vietnam War, the brigade participated in major campaigns including the Tet Offensive, the Battle of Khe Sanh, and operations in the Mekong Delta. In the post-Cold War era, it provided trained aviators and support for Operation Just Cause in Panama and the Gulf War. In the 21st century, the brigade's training pipeline was essential for generating aviation forces for Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, adapting curricula for counter-insurgency warfare.

Throughout its history, the brigade has operated and trained crews on a vast array of United States military aircraft. In Vietnam, its fleet included the UH-1 Iroquois, AH-1 Cobra, CH-47 Chinook, and OV-1 Mohawk.
