Its modern history began in the 18th century when the Marquis de Lessert popularized the curative properties of the Cachat spring. By the 19th century, under the Duchy of Savoy and later following the Treaty of Turin, it became part of France and was transformed into a leading European spa destination, attracting aristocracy and celebrities. The town hosted the signing of the Évian Accords in 1962, which ended the Algerian War and established the independence of Algeria. Throughout the 20th century, it solidified its status as a venue for high-level diplomatic meetings and international events.

The town is served by the Évian-les-Bains station on the Tonkin–Évian railway line, providing regional rail connections to Thonon-les-Bains and Annemasse, with links to the Swiss network via Geneva. Major road access is provided by the D1005 road running along the lake shore. Passenger ferries operated by the Compagnie Générale de Navigation sur le lac Léman connect it to Lausanne, Geneva, Montreux, and other lakeside towns in both France and Switzerland.
